The young Russian photographer Maria Gruzdeva has been pronounced the winner of the first edition of the Gabriele Basilico Prize. Dedicated to the internationally renowned architecture and landscape photographer, the Prize aims to become an important point of reference for the research and experimentation of visual languages amongst the new generations, with whom Basilico had always cultivated constructive dialogue.

The jury declared Maria Gruzdeva the winner from amongst a group of six finalists for her project devoted to the transformations presently taking place in the Georgian town of Tkvarcheli. Gruzdeva's photographic analysis focuses on what remains of the city and its inhabitants now that the coal mines, on which its industrial economy was based, have been closed. The work of the young artist is collected in a book that will be published in 2016. It contains a series of images documenting the present urban landscape, portraits of the town’s inhabitants, and archival materials, in a reflection on the history of the city and the changes taking place.
Having collaborated closely with Gabriele Basilico since the early 1980s for the realization of important cultural projects, exhibitions and publications, UniFor is proud of its role as technical sponsor of the prize in the great photographer’s memory.
